California State Library Case Study
We were the original developers and managers of the California State Library web site. We began this project in 1995 with designs on paper. We managed and grew this site through four generations, implementing the basic workflow and technologies used today, including:
- Site Development: We developed this site through four generations. Originally a hand built collection of pages, we grew the site to become a set of sophisticated applications involving hundreds of pages of information from static exposition to dynamic pages which draw their content from databases.
- Content Management: We implemented a sophisticated content management system which allowed us as well as selected library staff to update pages in a controlled design environment. This system allowed for the creation and maintenance of modular pages without the use of frames. The system also provided backup and restore services.
- Application Services: The CSL was one of the first sites of its kind to feature an application server. This provided the site managers with the flexibility to create online applications including surveys, search tools and directories.
- Accessibility: We assisted the Library in adopting design methods and implementation technologies that facilitated the use of adaptive technologies to increase site accessibility. We performed this work with particular attention to Federal section 508 guidelines.
